HERITAGE FRIDAY 2023
Cultural heritage; war and identity
November 17th 12:30-17:00
Ukraine House in Denmark, Gammel Dok, Strandgade 27B, 1401 København
This year, Blue Shield Denmark’s focus is on the use of cultural heritage as a strategic and tactical tool in modern conflicts.
Cultural heritage has always functioned as a political, ideological, and strategic symbol during conflicts. Today, exemplified by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it is also recognized as part of military strategies and hybrid warfare. Accordingly, state and non-state actors exploit cultural heritage to legitimize or de-legitimize claims to justice, identity, and territorial attachment and to achieve military, political, economic, and diplomatic advantages.
Heritage Friday 2023 will discuss the challenges facing the protection and preservation of cultural heritage during modern conflicts whether it be conflicts targeting social justice, non-state actors in the Middle East or the war in Ukraine.
